Henry Greenly famously designed the original steam locomotives for the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway (RHDR) of 15inch gauge in the 1920s.
H S C Bullock of Farnborough built a number of miniature steam locomotives a few number of which survive.
I have J B Snell’s “One Man’s Railway” on the RHDR, and W J K Davies’ RHDR book, and Kenneth A Bullock’s biography of his father “H C S Bullock His Life and Locomotives”.
As to Bullock, J B Snell states that Bullock committed suicide (p.88) as a result of Captain J Howey owner of the RHDR commissioning a 15”g LMS “Princess Royal class 4 cylinder pacific.
Ken Bullock makes no mention of his father committing suicide, but that he passed away peacefully on 20th November 1937 “physically and mentally exhausted”.
Does anyone have any further details please?
[My initial contact with miniature steam locomotives was via the Littlehampton Miniature Railway which had 2 Thurston locomotives strongly associated with Bullock).
The departure of Greenly from the RHDR is mentioned by Davies and Snell in their respective books nearly 20 years apart. Both give somewhat different slants on the same story; a set of drawings or a drawing for what became “Black Prince” and “Doctor Syn” of the RHDR made as drawings/a drawing by Richardson being removed by Greenly in January 1929 and the GM of the RHDR Bellamy calling in the police and Greenly being arrested and charged, but after the first magistrates hearing the criminal charges were dropped.
Snell is once again a bit more forthright.
Can anyone shed any further light on the above 2 episodes please?
Cheers, Julian
