Hi. I wondered if anyone had first hand experience constructing a Winson/Modelworks 5 inch Southern King Arthur and has anyone seen one work! How many kits were produced? I am constructing a Modelworks GWR 1400 kit and have found the quality to be excellent but have been frustrated by the order in which parts are supplied (waiting 18 months for buffer stocks so I can complete and prime the chassis for instance). I have therefore put it to one side until I have all the kits and I am currently constructing a King Arthur. The tender is 90% complete and work is progressing on the loco chassis with no problems encountered yet! I didn't however want to press on if there are any known faults with the design. The first kits were Winson (loco & tender chassis) and the rest Modelworks (Boiler, fittings, platework & tender body) and the difference in quality of the parts is immediately apparent. Many thanks, tbroyd

Hello tbroyd, This is the only loco , the Southern King, I have never heard about or seen from these manufacturers at a show, club or on model engineering sites. When I was at the factory in January I asked if any were working and there was certainly no mention of a running model but I cannot remember what the comments were. One thing to look out for with the chassis is the piston rods. Both my locos and others that I have spoken to have all had rods too short or too long but each kit for the same loco can have different problems, so for example, what could be wrong in kit 6 for you might be okay for another persons kit 6, or his problem might be different to yours. You can even have different sized parts in one kit, my A4 had 3 piston rods all of different lengths.

I do believe I saw one pre production model at Winsons when I called in once.I don't think it was a popular choice of model to produce,I have not heard of anyone else buying one let alone building one. Good luck, you may be pleasantly surprised yet.
Phil.

Hi I know of one that is working, but it has been modified. I believe it wasnt a popular model and was known to be a difficult kit to construct but a reasonable performer when correctly constructed. It would worth getting hold of a set of Greenly King Arthur drawings if you can find some. Did you get the sales info?

Hello I have heard of a Winson/Modelworks King Arthur which is in the final stages of completion which was apparently in a shocking state when received. I gather it has been completed within 4 months with much help from the great chaps at Modelworks and has steamed once already!! and very successfully I hear. I think it may well be at the Modelworks rally Cant wait!!

Hi I remember seeing a King Arthur running around at the ModelWorks (MW) owners day at Bedford last year. It was being driven by a young lad (about 12 yr old ish!) and ran all day. I had a brief chat with the lads dad who said his son had actually built it (WOW!!) and apart from a lot of fitting very few, if any, mods were needed. I'm sure there is a photo on the MW website (unless i dreamt it!!

Hi,
I have just finished a king Arthur ! It runs well and was quite easy to put together. The valves and valve liners needed the usual rubber O rings and PTFE rings. Apart from that the thing just works well. I have a couple of very short video files of it running at Gilling if anyones interested and lots of pictures of the build.
Now I just have the line it and add the name plates and number.

Dear all, I became the owner of (I hope) a complete kit of the King Arthur. I'm missing instructions for Kit 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 14. Can anyone help me with these instructions? I will naturally pay for postage and copying costs.
Regards,
Michel (m.a.bais@xs4all.nl)

Hi Pannierstan,
He actually already did! But shame on me I did not see the message in my in-box on this forum:( I will keep you all updated about my progress. First thing I like to share with all of you is the bad quality of the motion rods etc. made by Winson. They are not straight, not square, very rough milled, etc. Luckily most complicated parts are made by Modelworks and they look really nice.
Regards,
Michel

Hi All, This seasons modifications on the King Arthur have finally really made the difference, after big problems with pulling power I did some tests to see how good the valves were , by measuring the pressure difference across the piston it quickly became clear that the valve arrangement was not up-to the job. After consulting a very experienced member at Gilling club I took his advice and (after some attempts and a few hundred yards of cast iron) managed to make new cast iron liners and solid valves. The fit has to be very good, its actually down to "feel", but the results are worth the effort. The engine is transformed. Making new liners also lets you make steam pockets behind the rather vague winson steam passages in the block , so breathing is also improved. The lesson is , a loco is only as good a the pressure difference across its pistons.... obvious ... but easy to overlook ! LOCO WORKS

Hi Ian, I dropped out because my other half suggested that I should finish the Brit first. Jan's quite right because I might have been distracted and finished neither. I also read (on this site) some quite damning comments as to the quality of these specific kits. Still, bring on the credit crunchers: there will be more bargains for us fogies to snap up! JB

Hi JB, Your other half sounds like my other half ! Unfortunately my other half gave up her job to act as a carer for an elderly relative across the road which entails 3 or 4 visits a day for meals etc., this leaves me with a very small window of opportunity to get things delivered and stashed away. Yes, perhaps the credit crunch will provide a few pickings for us vultures, so long as it doesn't affect our suppliers as they are already few and far between. Brit's looking good by the way.
Cheers,
Ian.
