credit crunch giving you pickings!!! If you talk to the dealers they cant get stock fast enough as soon as they get it someone buys it, so I doubt if you will get any great bargins. Have a look at Station road steam to see his turn over and there are many items Mike gets that never reach his website. One of the boards recently was discussing a 5" Allchin that sold less than a month ago for £35K. All the wealthy people are taking money out of stocks and investments and have been for months and moving it into other areas like vintage/classic cars and steam models. If nothing else the tax man cant see it when its in metal form.

Interesting take on it Andy, I had noticed the turn over with Mike as well, and I was teasing a retired farmer pal of mine [ from Aberdeenshire ] a few weeks ago when HBOS got into difficulties, about buying more vintage tractors, and he said that he'd " bocht fower last wik " I phoned him a week later to find out what they were and he was very uncommunicative, so I said " Is your wife listening ?" He said.." Aye..." so I changed the subject !! Other halves don't seem to understand the investment potential of dirty old machinery....

Just come of the phone from a dealer friend. Hes got 4 people chasing one engine and I know him well enough to believe it. It seems the machine tool dealers are doign just as well. All the english tooling is being bought by the Indians and chinese. that explains the silly prices some industrial kit is going for.

But isn't that complete models that wealthy people would buy as an investment rather than a part built or restoration project that they probably wouldn't have the skills to finish ? Anyway, money can't buy you the satisfaction of having built something with your own hands and brain.

Ian. Remember that money can't buy happiness: it just helps you to enjoy your misery!

I need some help with the valve gear on a KA I acquired. It was built, nicely painted, but as often found with really nicely painted locos that were just display items it had never been run. I run all my locos because that's what they are meant to be used for.
I've been cleaning up some things that the original builder didn't quite get right - mainly valve problems and a few steam leaks; nothing major.
However I am trying to ensure that the return cranks are correctly assembled and positioned. Seems a simple task .. but there's nothing I can find in the build notes that ensure that it was done right.
Does anyone here have a working Winsons/Modelworks KA that they could take some photos of the crank and valve gear settings for me. I have 4 relevant (left side crank front dead centre and also back dead centre, ditto right side)
Help appreciated. Gordon
