Most certainly not an old wives tale, steel will start to rust as soon as it has been grit blasted. I personally would keep away from 2 pack, plenty of colours available in coach enamel. Primer for steel and brass, Halfords sell Upol #8 etch primer in a rattle can, it works well on brass and steel. As Christmas is fast approaching why not ask Santa for a copy of Chris Vines excellent book, How (not) to paint a locomotive, it’s packed with USEFUL information.

Hi Ron,
Yes, you really must put etch primer onto brass. It works well as a primer on steel too. The Upol Acid #8 is good stuff. There may be better, but it is simple to use and works well.
I am not sure how important it is to get the etch onto brass soon after it has been grit blasted. But sooner is probably better before oxides get there.
At the moment I'm in the middle of repainting and overhauling a small tank engine which I made years ago. Videoing the process to put onto youtube in a few month's time. Hopefully it will be useful, and maybe as an illustration to go with the book?!
Please do order a copy, I will sign it for you of course. There are a few rare, unsigned, copies!!!
All best Chris.
