I'm building Bantam Cock, a 3 1/2" 2-6-2 tender loco. What shall I use in my cylinders made from Reeves cast gunmetal? - rings - graphite yarn - or 'O' rings, and what should the pistons be made from. Advice welcome.

Hello Reklawwc this is only my view I would use stainless steel for the pistons and O rings Bob

Thanks Bob. Are the 'O' rings ordinary silicon rubber or anything special. Chris

Hello Chris Yes Silicone for the O rings. To explain the reason I use them, when I built my Tich I started out using Graphite packing but was never really satisfied with the result. Having asked around at the club various views were forth coming. I was advised to use the O ring option as a result the Tich runs much better. One thing to remember is to get the dimensions of the groove correct. If you get a Blackgates Catalogue it gives the correct dimensions. I hope this helps Bob

It helps a lot. On my Simplex I used cast iron cylinders and and piston rings, works fine. Gunmetal has different properties. Thanks Bob.

Hello reklawwc,
Unless your engine is in kit form, I'd move your thread up to the "General, general chat" area, you might get more people looking at the post. At the moment you've posted in a special section for Modelworks builders.
Waggy.
