People, Think I've solved a mystery that's been puzzling me for for a long while.......I've read many tales of woe regarding these inexpensive sharpeners and couldn't figure out why those good folk had no success. Have used a 'General Drill Sharpening Jig' for some 20 yrs. with very acceptable results. A friend was throwing out a similar jig and said he couldn't get it to work....and I could have it.Took it to my workshop and tried it.......no backoff whatsoever. Compared it to the 'General' and the penny dropped..... See pics..... [ Compliments of the Seaon to all and may peace reign upon all of us on this good planet Earth.

So what you're saying then is:the el cheapo version grinds at67degrees,rather than the correct 59? So if i mount the base at an 8 degree angle, the angle to the grinder would be correct? Worth a try,if only for the satisfaction of getting some use out of a piece of junk:).thanks for the tip.

Question:
Why don't your hats fall off in Oz and NZ?
Life is impossible on the Moon - imagine all the pushing and shoving at half-moon.

In OZ and NZ our brains are so intense and strong that creates a strong gravitational power to keep our hats on .

Harold Hall gives a very good explanation of how this type of sharpener works. The instructions that came with mine are c**p. However after reading Harold's explanation it works fine.
One of the main problems seems to be that the cutting edge should be vertical when presented to the wheel. If the projection of the tip of the drill beyond the jig is right to get the correct cone form the edge is not kept vertical by the little finger (at least not on my example). Harold hall shows a simple alternative way of maintaining the edge vertical.
Russell.
P.S. Here my hat must be at about 45 degrees!

With Lidl.uk offering a 6" DE Grinder for £19.99 in a couple of days, my mind turned to doing drills on one. Googling a bit, I found a 13page article on 'Twist drill grinding attachment' in www://penturners.org.
Can anyone point to where Harold Hall's article can be found- or is it similar?

Andrew, My thanks for the information. I thought that mine was one of the new variety but it seems to be a Reliance one after some rummaging in the undergrowth. Sorry to give you so much trouble!

I too can now understand why I haven't been using it, although had it for years. I will see if I can modify it some, and try it again
