ANyone have these to hand (journal and threads)... I've picked up some stuff that was claimed to be ML4 (the gears and travelling steady certainly are) but there are two different sizes of threads on some faceplates and I'd like to sort out what I've got... also does anyone have a set of jaws and screws for a (I think) 4" four-jaw chuck old enough to call itself "THe Burnerd" (ie before the Pratt-Burnerd merger)?.... it's a lovely little thing but it's missing two jaws and 2 screws.... If anyone is after some ML4 stuff I have a travelling steady that I don't want, a bullgear that seems to have all it's teeth, most of a set of changewheels (I like changewheels, see my other post) in the standard fives plus 38, some sort of changewheel mounting thingy-collar... plus there are the aforementioned faceplates.... I'm looking for a 1 3/8 non-stick Clarkson type C autolock chuck, preferably the bigger one, though the small one is lovely too......

Hello Chris, The spindle nose of an ML4 is very similar to the later ML7 in that the thread (1 1/8"-12) is the same, the overall length and length of thread is the same BUT on original ML4 spindles the plain section behind the thread is the same diameter as the thread whereas on the ML7 it is, of course, a slightly larger diameter, used as a register. This was an improvement that Myford made when they started manufacture of the ML7 to ensure concentricity of accessories held on the spindle nose. Any ML7 accessory (chuck, whatever) will fit an ML4 spindle nose but ML4 accessories will not fit an ML7 spindle unless modified to take account of the larger register. If you have any accessory with a thread that is not the standard Myford 1 1/8"-12 it is not for an original ML4 spindle. Regards, Tim

Hmm... lathes.co.uk says they changed the thread during the production run and that later ML4's were the same thread.... they don't say what the early ones were though....

Chris - you *might* have some Drummond M type stuff in there. Looks very similar to ML4 et al but has a 1 1/8" register and a 1inch x12tpi thread.

Charles

Early ML4s had the same nose thread as ML2s and even ML1s. The thread is standard 7/8 X 9 WW. There was some discussion elsewhere about the need to remove a few thou off the peak of the thread in order to ease chuck removal, but I have used a standard 7/8 WW tap to make backpplates and experienced no problems.
I would be interested in any ML4 bits you have for sale. Would you like to drop me an email with details and prices?
