I've been designing the boiler for my engine and in the coarse of me research i've read martin evans 1969 book on loco boilers and most of his designs for round topped boilers that have the barrel extending to the backhead don't have the top edge of the thought plate flanged to the barrel, for new designs is this acceptable?

I dont know if it is acceptable, but I wouldnt have thought it was good practice, and I wouldnt do it that way.

Apparently Martin Evans boilers never comply to his own formulas anyway. I know a couple of people who have tried it and neither of them got the results that Martin used on his designs.
