Which loco won? The 14xx usually does well, but the 42xx looks very nice. I'm biased to the 14xx though..... The contraption fitted to Romulus is very strange, an odd way to raise steam. I cant think of a simpler way than shoving a sucker on top of the chimney, other than a plumbed in pipe with stop valve for coupling to a fixed air line? Raising steam with no apparent air mover. I have seen tapred pipes fitted with blower nozzles using compressed air that fit the chimney like a sucker fan.

I liked the 42xx as well. it would be interesting to see what difference in performance there was between the 42xx and the 28xx as they are have the same wheels, cylinders etc but the 42xx has a smaller boiler, the standard no. 4 compared to the the no. 1 on the 28xx, or they were on the prototypes anyway! you never know how many changes the builder has made where you can't see.

Due to family commitments in the afternoon I wasn't able to stay till the end so I don't know who won.The technical editor from Model Engineer was there [with camera],so the event should be written up in the mag soon. The steam raiser on the Romulus was a strange device. The 14xx ran very well indeed, hauling quite a load for a comparitively small loco. The 38xx was,I believe, built by Tony Newberry, who has built a number of GW loco models. A few more pics of the 38xx as requested.

Many thanks for those great pics Laurie, a 7 1/4" 38 is in the pipeline once I have completed my 5" A3, I have been working on scaling down the Swindon drawings etc. but have had to put such things aside or the aforementioned A3 will never get finished!
Cheers, Mike
