Recently I have been looking through descriptions of milling machines and have wondered what some of the references mean. Please forgive such a basic question, but my engineering knowledge is somewhat limited.
References such as AEW, A1S, VMC, and VTM appear to be used by various manufacturers. Are they generic terms? I do now realise that a VTM is a vertical turret mill. I assume the other references also define a type of machine, but could someone please explain what are the defining characteristics for each classification?
Any information would be welcome.
Thanks
Dave.

AEW is a copy of Viceroy mill originally bearing that code A1S is used by Chinese and Taiwanese makers to describe a species of turret mill that many make with minor changes VMC means vertical maching centre (ie mill!) eg Boxford 260VMC
