I am thinking of getting myself asmall lathe just to do a few bits and bobs.It needs to be small and easily carried,as I am presently working on a winson 1400 in the kitchen(otherwise known as "Swindon on the kitchen table)so it needs to be packed away at the end of each session.Would a Unimat or similar do,or should I aim for something a bit bigger?I am not intending to build another loco in the near future, but would like to try my hand at wagon building. TIA Phil

I suppose it depends if the largest part you need to make will swing over the bed.
Of the small benchtop lathes,I always liked the Cowells one,but even the last two on ebay went for over £600.00.I believe they are around £1700.00 new. I suppose they would still have good resale value in the future.

In addition to a Myford I have a "Mini lathe". My one was supplied by Warco but lots of other people sell very similar ones including Chester and Machine Mart. I find it hand for the smaller bits and in some respects easier to use than the Myford. I think it is 3.5" centres like the Myford (actually not mine which now has a 4" centre height but that is another story) but it is much smaller. It is a one strongish person lift and if you've not the space for a full size lathe then I'd say one of those would do very well. I understand there are lots of web sites and user groups supporting them. New they are around GBP375 second hand I suppose around half that.

Just joined up and saw the chat about 'buying a lathe' I to are looking at buying a lathe. Just seen the Axeminster BV20M Lathe. 110 center height,106 on cross slide and 350 between centers. Has any one seen one of these in action, got one or knows anyone who has one? and offer thoughts on it.
The lathe is a very reasonable price and seems to have all the items i will need to begin with. I am building a 3 1/2 LBSC engine (started it many years ago when at school but just picked it up again). Look forward to hearing from anyone.
