Does anyone know of any drawings or information on steam operated cylinder drain cocks. The Winson Baldwin we are rebuilding has them but if they are anything like most of the other bits they probably dont work, being crude and very roughly 'machined'. Have looked through all our old copies of ME but no luck. Did the Winson ones have springs to hold them open does anyone know? no sign of them in ours. (We bought the engine off someone who had to give up the unequal struggle).

I would try Doug Hewson as he is doing Steam Operated drain cocks for his BR Standard Class 4. www.the-hewsons.demon.co.uk/ I have no personal experience of them but know he is producing them and has done a write up on them for his series on the Standard Class 4 in Engineering in Miniature in the March 2004 edition. Many thanks to everyone
We looked up the quoted references in M.E. and although the articles described rather more elaborate devices the principle seemed the same i.e. no springs and the differential in the surface area either side of the "bobbin" is what makes them work. we'll see
