Hi All
I've had a bit of experience of building Stuart kits from castings but wondered if anyone had built any other makes and how they compared to Stuart for quality and price, in particular I was interested in a horizontal engine called 'Tina' advertised by a company called GLR Distributors recently in EiM, it seems to be very well priced compared to Stuart.

Have you considered one of Anthony Mount's creations? Ok some are devilish, but there are others that are very much easier and they look very sexy when completed......

I don't know the Tina model you mention, but GLR have been around for quite a while, largely as suppliers of materials (steel, brass, bronze etc.). They took over a lot of Kennions stuff when they closed down (I think) and have been supplying castings for some time now.
I've dealt with them on a number of occasions and have found them helpful.

I recommend the Anthony Mount designs and they have accompanying 'words & music' (in EIM)to keep us amateurs on course!
I made the Tuxford a couple of years ago and was well pleased with it - hardly any scrap!

Ron, I have personaaly made half a dozen of Anthony Mount's engines ,ALL FABRICATED FROM stock materials , all but one have tured out as nice looking models,all , but one work
on air . The last one i made was shown on here earlier this year, in an unfinnished , state,
and was well recieved ,if it is, i think you will agree is a fair sized model and , when turning
over is a joy to watch.
I should add i NEVER buy castings,my policy is , if you can buy a casting YOU CAN FABRICATE
IT. ! ! !
So Ron HAVE A GO,! ! !,
If you run into trouble give me a shout i will do my best to help you.
By the way the only engine i have failed,so far with is the" RECTILINEAR ENGINE"
AND I WILL BEAT THAT LITTLE B----R befre i'm finnished

If so can I recommend separate workshops. It gets very annoying when some infiltrator borrows all 6 of your 4" smooth files!

Now there lieth the voice of reason. While, to the casual observer, my workshop exists in a state of utter chaos I can usually put my hand on anything. But if anyone shopuld move something, even by a few inches .....

I guess your workshop is a copy of mine, even if it is a few thousand miles away.
mabe you are like me ,dont have time to clean up every day, i usually turf the
swarfe out when it gets up to my knees,then i bag it up and take it to the scrappy
and swap it for a bit or two of steel.
Waste not ,want not ,I , believe is the term.
Oh !!!, and i dont like spending my money either.

Well, I chickened out and bought the castings for the Stuart Victoria, don't think my weeny boiler will run it though, maybe I'm a bit unusual for a Scotsman, but I don't mind spending money, that's what it's for, don't want to end up the richest man in the cemetary. ;D

The Victoria is a nice engine & pretty straight forward. My fabricated mill engine is loosely based on it, with quite a few changes. ;D

Very nice Tel, I like the hardwood cladding on the cylinder, I fitted some mahogany strips with brass bands to my small vertical boiler and I think I'll do likewise with the Victoria.

Hi All
Happy to report that the Victoria is finished and running, ran it for 1/2 hr yesterday on air and for about an hour this afternoon on steam, much to my surprise the small vertical boiler copes with it [just] with the exhaust going up the lum, it runs about 100rpm with the pressure settling about 35psi, topping up the boiler water kills it though. The boiler set up was a bit Heath Robinson, so there is room for improvement.

good to hear you got her finished, is it a single or double? I am thinking of trying to build the double , that is if I can barter all the bits of ''TICH'' I am not going to be using...
