Just before Christmas i had a bit of an eccentric idea. The major components were to be a biggish steam powered stationary engine coupled with an appropriate sized boiler.
I want the actual engine to be about 3" diameter bore and have a size of around 20" plus. (just to look good).
The real problem is, I cant find any sites that have any for sale. Does any 'stationary steam' people know of any good sites to keep an eye on.

Hi Alan, Go into WH Smiths or similar, and look for 'Stationary Engine' magazine. Printed monthly, it's a magazine from Kelsey Publishing for all stationary engine enthusiasts. You will find lots of people selling the type of engines you are after, along with articles on rebuilding, etc. Good luck to you. I need to get my 2 1/2 hp AMANCO engine out for the summer soon! www.stationary-engine-magazine.co.ukGeoff

Thanks for the replies. I did check out the stationary engine mag and went through about 10 copies. lovely mag but centred around IC type engines. maybe i was a bit unlucky.
I have checked out the list of traders also. Not really keen on what they have and the prices they want. It only an eccentric whim.
any other suggestions very welcome
Alan

A stuart 5A? A bit smaller than you wanted, but pretty hefty

Hi Alan Don't know if it's anywhere near you, but I was in the Windermere Steamboat museum last November and they had a couple of sizeable engines for sale along with boilers. Ron

Hello Alan, There is an American manufacturer of both casting sets and complete engines called Tiny Power (TINYPOWER.COM) that does some big stuff, I've got small stuff from them in the past, the carriage may be a bit hefty though! Tim

I've a biggish horizontal stationary. Off the top of my head 3-4" stroke and a couple of inches bore well over 20" long. It is an demonstration model I think as it very unusually has for a period (late Victorian) horizontal reversing gear. Even odder it has crossed rods Stephenson's valve gear. It is buried as I am moving my workshop and I'll probably forget but feel free to remind me to let you have pics.

Not really Terry. I've built a shiny new workshop which I'm populating with the stuff I really care about. There is a load of other stuff I've not seen in 20 years hanging around which I doubt I'll ever play with.
Erin has just been told that she is going to lose her job so things will be a deal tighter (kangaroo, storm drain, sandstorm: make up your own expression) not helped by stumping up for school fees for the girls. So now seems like a good time to cash in some of my chips.
That and it actually would be nice to see some of the stuff I've collected used and enjoyed rather than just standing. So I'm not giving it away but I'll be thinning the collection.
Ooops did I mention the 8" vertical boiler I was building to power the horizontal? Done a fair bit (rolled and silver soldered the barrel and firebox flanged and bored the plates but stopped when I realised I'd not the heat to do the foundation ring.
