Hi all
I have been asked to provide a boiler for a friend's Stuart 5A, 2" X 2 1/4" single vertical approx 800 RPM, suitable for installation in a small steam launch. I am proposing a vertical boiler with some cross water tubes in the firebox.
Can anyone point me towards a formula or guidelines to allow me to proportion this boiler to suit the engine please? As I say it is destined for a launch but will likely be a 'puffer' and not condensing. I'm interested to know about matching the boiler size to the steam demands.
Cheers
Brian

I have done that calculation, just for fun you understand, using the data in Model Engineers Handbook but online Alan Stepney's site has, I think, all you need starting on page 8 thus:- www.alanstepney.info/page23.html but it's pretty much all worth reading anyway! Cheers, Andy

Thanks Circlip, I have made the 'mistake' of loaning my copy of that book to the chap with the engine in question! If I recall there is a vertical boiler in there number 8 or 9 which is the type I'm proposing. Does the book provide the necessary calculations regarding the size of the boiler though? I can't remember!
Been looking at Model Engineer's Handbook and hope to find something there. No luck as yet due to attending the MESNI AGM this evening, after the meeting 2" of snow greeted us in the car-park. By the time I'd crossed the Lagan/Lough there was nothing on the ground and by Carrickfergus you'd have thought it was a different week let alone day! Think I'll take the book to bed..............
Cheers
Brian
PS He's looking at gas firing the boiler as well, in case anyone thinks that will affect sizes etc.

Yep gives P.L.A.N. and all other calcs., plate thickness tube spacing et al. You really should "CHASTISE" the "gentleman" in question, he knows he's got all the information. Always fancied a small Scotch, ( settle down drjohn, it's a boiler) or even a Yarrow. best wishes, Ian
