I have a Myford Super 7 with the oil feed to the front headstock bearing from a cup at the front via a sprung wick to the mandrel. IE The usual, more recent, type.
My question is, Where does this oil go to? It does not spray off the outside of the mandrel and it does not come off the inside because the belt guard would be covered. Does it drip down inside the casting somewhere?
seeps down headcasting, collects swarf into messy heaps, runs down lath stand where you can't reach, stains floor gets on shoes, walked into house with attached swarf - wife gives bollocking.

If it's anything like the oiling system on my early (1948) ML7 then it goes everywhere. 10 minutes after you've been anywhere near my lathe with an oilcan there's a thin even layer of the stuff over everything in the shed. Doesn't half make my tea taste funny (until you get used to it whereupon tea without oil seems to lack a certain something......)
chrissyvine, not had a bollocking for oil and swarf in the house yet?, you must have a different breed of wife than most of us ,or, you aint heard nothin' yet, after 47 years wed and more in model engineering i can't remember when i did'nt get a bollocking, and that was BEFORE i went in the shed. never mind you've got that pleasure to come !!!!!!! keep on oiling up cheers
