Burton Upon Trent MES

We are a group of model engineering enthusiasts that meet at our clubhouse and grounds in Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire. Our Society was founded in 1947 and will celebrate its 60 year anniversary in 2007. Thanks to the efforts of dedicated members our tracks and facilities have been continuously developed and expanded.

The main interest represented within the Society is the steam and diesel railway locomotive, although members also have an interest in steam road vehicles, stationary steam engines, as well as engineering machine tools. To compliment our permanent raised level track, worked has recently been completed on a ground level track with associated point work, turntable, and access points. Our facilities now provide the following track work :-

A raised level track of 800 feet, for 3 1/2 and 5 inch gauges. The minimum radius of curves is 42 feet. The ground level track is suitable for 5 inch. and 7 1/4 inch gauges. Both the raised level and ground level tracks have their own steaming bays. Our grounds have ample car parking. New projects are being considered to further improve the site and facilities available to members and visiting societies.

I watched your club website and looks very similar to ours except we are at Fairfield NSW Australia . We also cater for Birthdays like your club . It is a great idea to advertise your club here.I did too . Please visit my website and you can see our grounds and visit our club website.

thanks for your kind comments. You should include your club on this site for all to see, like I did for our club. I have just zommed across the world on the internet and found your club site, it likes very impressive, how many members do you have? we have around 50 but u only ever see around 25 there is a hard core of 'older' members who attend the club track on Tuesdays and carry out maintenance etc, I think its an excuse to get out of the house!!!! I unfortunately have to work so I only get down infrequently. The club is about 5miles from me so I suppose i'm just lazy really, I wonder if I can see your track on 'Google Earth' have to try that. Unfortunatly the detail is not that good yet for ours at Burton

I have done that and it is on this forum .we have approximately 50 members ( surprise ) . Did you watch my website which will give an idea about clubs in the OZ , as the videos are taken in different clubs. I often visit other clubs and somebody takes video and sometimes are kind enough to give me a copy .

The new website looks very good,seems easy enough to use (even for a techno-phobe like me!) and is very informative.That 73082 loco looks vaguely familiar!
Maybe some photos of the Society's exhibition stands would be nice to see,maybe they will appear in the future.
I joined the society last year,and found ithe members there very friendly,and helpful too.
Attached are pics I took at the N.A.M.E.S. rally last July.It was one of the hottest days of 2006!

Although it doesnt go in so far as Google Earth, the whole of the UK is to the same resolution. The Burton track is quite clearly seen, if I've followed the directions correctly from the website!

Simon,you have followed the directions exactly!The club house is quite prominent in the image,and the raised track is quite noticable as it casts a shadow.Outside of that runs the ground 5"& 7-1/4"level track.The white spot roughly to the north-east of the club house is the ground level steaming bays and turntable,visible in the lower photo in a previous post.

its great to see your site like that, just tried it on ours (Huddersfield) and it isn't there! I guess it doesn't update that often as the track has been down for at least five years.

I've just checked the Bromsgrove track. Since the aerial picture was taken we've doubled the length of the raised track, put a roof over the steaming bays, put a G1 track in and extended the 16mm track. Clearance work for the raised track extension hadn't started when the picture was taken, and I think taht was about 2000 or 2001. Google Earth is much more up to date.
