Hi All, On the age old subject of paint. I am about to paint the chassis of a 5" Nigel Gresley 2-8-0. I was wondering if anyone can assist with the type and colour of paint. It seems that nowadays it is popular to spray paint the frames, but I have not got access to spraying facilities.
Thanks

Hi,
First I assume that the colour of the chassis is black. This may be wrong!
Personally I think that a full gloss on a chassis is too harsh, any errors of shape or texture on castings looks wrong. I also dislike matt paints, they look too flat. There is a happy medium called semi gloss. The one I have used a lot is made by Trimite ltd and can be hand painted or sprayed, it is a machinery enamel.
Another point is that often the chassis of a steam locomotive is red on the inside. On a B1 from the LNER this was red between the back of the smokebox saddle and the front of the firebox. You hardly see it but it is not much trouble to do in the scheme of things....
Have fun, Chris.

Hi Chris, thanks for your comments, I have had a quick look at the Trimite website, and they have got a wide range of paint. I don,t suppose you happen to know the code of the paint that you use.

Hi,
The Trimite machinery paint is RE503, I used the semigloss version.
The thinner I used for spraying this paint is NM6835. As an added bonus this works perfectly with a well known model engineering paint suppliers' enamels and for about a tenth the price!!!
I had so much grief painting my recent locomotive, an LNER B1 in 7.25" gauge that I am now in the process of writing a book on the subject. I am sure that some of my methods are non-standard but they worked for me...
If I can be of any more help please get in touch via email, address is on my profile cheers Chris.
