Hi All, new to this site, in the process of building a Model Works 14XX and ran into my first problem. The super heater element is stopping me installing the petticoat pipe in the smokebox. The paperwork does not say how to fit it and I'm unsure how to progress. please help. I have seen a great blog on the building of a Britannia, has any one done something similar for a 14XX?

Hi Pete,
Glad you like my Britannia website. I'm not aware of anything similar for the 14xx, although I'm sure that Mott and others will be able to give you some advice.
Is this a new batch of 14xxs that Modelworks are producing? Their website has been advertising a new batch 'starting in May 2006' but I was never sure whether this actually happened.
Regards, John

Hi John,
your web site is first class, must admit you are giving me ideas of buying a Britannia myself. The 14XX is from the 2004 batch purchased by my sons as a gift. will wait and see if Mott and the others can help. thanks Pete

Hi Pete,
Member Phil Sutton is also building (or built) a MW 14xx. You could leave him a personal message, but I'm sure he'll be around in the fourm shortly. ;D

Hah,haven't sorted this one yet.Winsons didn't provide a pettycoat pipe so I used a "Didcot" one. It's turned and fits into the chimney, but I have yet to suss out how I'm going to screw it all together! When all the stress making household alterations are done(new 3 piece ,decorating etc) are done and the place is a bit more straight,I'll have to get around to having a look see. Will post here what I end up doing. Phil

Hi Pete, You may just have to shorten the petticoat in order to get it up into the chimney without fouling the banjo bolt of the superheater/steam pipe. It doesn't need much taking off. Do it by trial and error hacksawing or filing the top. Then the edge of the belled out end should go over the bolt head and the other end can be pushed up into the chimney base without jamming. Push the petticoat hard up so it sticks out of the base of the chimney and then using sealent push the chimney down on top. There is a flange on the chimney casting for this purpose. I dont recommend fixing the petticiat permenantly as you may well need to remove the banjo bolt many times to sort out other problems and each time the petticoat has to come out first in order for you to get a box spanner on to it. Hope this helps. Mott
