Having almost completed building a Modelworks 14xx I have to ask whether anyone out there has built a reliable runner. I keep reading of failures of o-rings, lubricators and regulators which prompts me to ask the opening question. I am awaiting to hear the good news. "Yes, it does run."

Pete Thomas has a Winson 1400 that runs well, after he tweaked it,so I suspect there are several more out there that do as well.In fact Mott has a running 1400,but I don't know if it is a Winson or MW loco.

Hello, I'm new to this forum. I've build a 14xx on 5" gauge to the plans of Neville Evans. These plans were also used by Winson. I can tell you that the enige will run! It's a delight to drive, easy to fire and hold steam, fast on the track if you want and capable of pulling a heavy train. Erik,
That photo on your site of the Didcot at speed from the drivers perspective is one of the best Engine pis I've seen.

Hi Phil and Erik Many thanks for your replies re steaming 14XXs. Erik, what a superb model, enjoyed the action footage. Have watched it a few times now. My model is ready for testing so let's see what happens next year. I've thoroughly enjoyed the build and have learnt a great deal in the process, for it to actually run would be a real bonus.

Hi Marten,
I've seen two 14xxs running nicely at my North London club - one a Winson, the other a Modelworks.
Regards,
John

Hi Marten, Yes I have a running Modelworks 14xx, though I have to accept that it is a high maintenance engine, drives well on its day, but often below full efficiency because of minor niggles, especially the regulator which can fail to close fully.Getting a good seal between piston and cylinders is difficult and the whole host of alternatives from O rings, PTFE, cast iron, soft packing have been tried by various people. I am using clupet iron rings successfully but Modelworks supplied me with a second set of cylinders which they honed .In the original cylinders the drilling for the end plates bolts caused visible bulges in the end s of the bores and quickly destroyed the O rings, this problem may have been a 'one off'. Best of luck, I will be interested in your results. Mott.
