I would like to say a big hello to everyone on this board; I am a new member to this board and quite new to the world of model engineering!!! I have been dabbling with a few stationery engines and even started build a 5” B1. I have recently purchased a ModelWorks Black 5 that had been started not to a high standard and have found my self stripping and rebuilding, I guess some of you would say assembling is closer to the truth!! I would be very interested in hearing from anybody else who is either making or already built one of these engines and maybe swap hints and tips with them.
Thanks
Jason

Hi Jason, I don't own one and I'm not building one (although I do have the drawings and wheel castings for the Don Young Black 5) but I came across a website by a lady building one of the kits: www.steamway.dircon.co.uk/main5.htmlYou may have already seen it. The site doesn't appear to have been updated for over a year but you might get some useful info from it. John Just been beaten to it by JJ! Great minds think alike!

Hi Jason Make sure you have got all the repalcement parts from Modelworks. These kits seems to have had a bit of a rocky ride with changes to the suspension and I believe valve gear.

Hi Andy Thanks for your advice, I have been in touch with ModelWorks who have supplied the mods you said as well as a few extra ones, I must admit they have been very helpful, I know they have had a lot of bad press but up to now i can't complain Cheers Jason

Hi Jason, Just found this site. I am building the said 9F on the steamway site. I am up to kit 16.I am giving a report covering the build so she can up date the web site.let me know how you are doing.I have had problems with the mod on the valve gear (would not run backwards on air)and had to take it back to modelworks as the mod did not work.OK now.the fuseable plug was loose fit but got more from modelworks.
Good luck, mike1

Hi John, Yes, the Black 5 is now ready for it's steam test, already passing its hydraulic ealier this year. I will probably now wait until around Easter for this when the weather is better . Jason

Hi Mike,
So have you bought the Black 5 off Suzi? If so have you carried on from Kit 12 where the Web site stopped or had she got further?

Hi Jason,
Yes, from kit 12,but I had take it apart for mods and painting.I know Suzi from working as a fireman on the Bluebell Railway,if you have read her website see talks of Clive and I worked with Clive in his BR days. Not sure what you know, he runs the driving courses at the Bluebell.I bought the engine about a year ago.I have also done part of kit 19 mod to the tender draw bar for pulling extra weight. What kit are you up to? I found the regulator valve a bit tricky.
Mike.

Hi Mike,
I have sent you a PM with my email address so you any email any questions. My Black 5 is now 95% complete, just needs a steam test to allow me to fully complete.
