Has anyone managed to 'break' the U/J the alters the direction of the screw jack shaft that operates the brake counter-shaft? The plastic bit has pulled out of the brass ferule that is grub-screwed to the shaft, I guess that the U/J is not meant to be used in tension. Does anyone know of a supplier of 'solid' U/J's. Yet another little challenge! Mike

Hi Mike, RS do quite a range of good quality U/Js although they are not cheap. They sell some 'blank' ones that you can drill/bore to suit the size of the shafts: rswww.comLook under mechanical products/ components/power transmission components. I am sure there will be other suppliers as well. John PS is Jason still around? I notice his website hasn't been updated since March 5th.

Hi Mike,
Modelworks have supplied two 5mm Huco universal joints for the reversing rod on the Britannia, which appear to be RS part no 688-975. I guess they'll be fine for this purpose, and they do operate very smoothly with no backlash. It sounds as though the one for your tender brake shaft is the same design, and it's described by RS as 'light duty'. Perhaps Modelworks might be persuaded to replace it with an all-metal design?
Regards,
John

Thank you John and John! Found them in the RS catalogue, and there is the acetal one by Huco that has come apart! I'll get one of the more expensive ones from lower down the page, (689-237); once the tender is complete, it will be very destructive to have to go back into the U/J location to rework it again, so it is quality and reliability that is needed! I doubt if MW could be persuaded to go for an item triple the cost of the original one I've not heard from Jason for ages, maybe if he reads this he will give us an update? Best wishes, Mike
