Hello everyone
Is there a suitable slide valve cylinder set that would fit my 3.5" gauge 'Doris' Black Five. I have tried making a new set of piston valves for the original piston valve cylinders but can't stop the blowpast the valves. I think the cylinders have just been bored out and left at that as they feel rough. Any help would be greatfull please.

Is there any way you could hone out the original cylinders? That would smooth the surface out,and then you could either make a new set of piston valves,or make up some new rings/packing for the old ones.

Hello Phil,
I have a expanding reamer that would fit, what sort of packing would you recommend, and would it not be pulled out when passing the ports?.
John.

Hi John, actually I was thinking more on the lines of piston rings, although on a 31/2" gauge loco they would have to be on the small size.Perhaps PTFE rings?I'm afraid I know nothing about 'Doris',just chucking ideas into the ring. Good luck though.

I have a vague idea that the original article mentioned that the castings from another LBSC design could be used and that would give slide valves for those that wanted them. Might have been Princess Marina.
( It would probably mean changing at least one lever on the valve gear too.)
However, the original design worked well, and at least one has done well at IMLEC, and many do hard work without any problems. Therefore, if it was me, I would try to sort out the existing arrangement and get that working right, rather than change the cylinders.
