Greetings all,
I would love to hear from anyone who has built, or is in the process of building the 6" Burrell Double Crank Comp. engines from LSM.
I'm interested to know if the design goes together well and if it is a good representation of the full size. (I'm not very familiar with traction engines.)
I've noticed the gear ratios and some of the overall dimensions between the 4" and the 6" in their catalog don't correlate by differing amounts and the gear ratios are vastly different. Are there any rallys for tracton engines around the Newcastle N.S.W. region?
Kind regards,
Ian.

Hi Ian, I built the 4" scale Burrell Single crank compound marketed by LSM. This had the usual crop of dimensional errors in it. What I found more of a problem was their commercial practices. I had a rash of undersize castings from them (which I returned). They then threatened to charge me a "re-stocking charge. I also had a cylinder block which would have machined to leave 3/16" of cast iron between me and 160 psi of live steam - so this was also returned.
In general, I would leave LSM alone. I notice Ragsdales Patterns of Redford do the castings, also Bailey Steam Engineering designs do machining etc. I think there is also a company called David Paige, but cannot currently trace details.
Hope that helps.
Martin

Hello Ian,
I am 3 years in to the build of a 4 inch Foster with castings and drawings from LSM. I have found all castings to be excellent and I have found no need to return any. Good design, good service and products, but not the cheapest.
