I've decided the steady thump thump from the drive belts on my new/old lathe are annoying, to save dismantling the headstock I've come across these:- tinyurl.com/2pol5oHas anybody any experience of this type of belt? Oh, the lathe is a Perfecto (ML4 copy) with a quarter horse motor so I don't expect power transmission capacity to be a problem! Cheers, Andy

Hi Andy The headstock drive belt on my Myford S7 is now looking decidedly frayed so I recently purchased one of these link belts ('A' section) thinking it will save having to strip the headstock and countershafts. I haven't needed to fit the new belt yet,but I'll let you know in due course if it is a success. I think someone has raised this topic before and commented that the linked belt system is likely to stretch a fair amount when it is first used,so it might need adjusting or a link removing after an initial period.

I replaced the belt on my lathe little while ago and I don't want to ever do it again . I am interested to know what the results are , also may I ask what is the cross section of this belt and can one buy it in longer than one mitre?

Shawki They list A and Z section belts and since it can be jointed you can have any length you can afford! I suspect I will go for it and will certainly report back here.
Cheers, Andy

Re lathe Drive Belts
I replaced the (replaced) the drive belt on my Myford MF74 lathe with an A section link belt. It works perfectly. As for stretching, there is none that I have noticed.
Cheers. Oldunone

Ok chaps, I have now fitted the belts and can report it was completely painless, they have cured the thumping from a lumpy joint in the old belts and are quiet enough. These are 'Powertwist Plus' belts from Fenner Drives, A section, max width is 1/2" and each link makes up 3/4" so you can have any length that is an exact multiple of 3/4". I've never bought standard belts so I can't say whether the 30 quid or so that these cost (with enough for a spare) is cheap or not, but it certainly beats the heck out of dismantling the headstock. Since it is trivial with my drive arrangement I have arranged to take the weight off the belts when the lathe is not in use - seemed like a good idea. Can't speak to stretch yet, time and a big pile of swarf will tell.
