When I was working in the nuclear industry on some items we had to be ultra sensitive to variation in micro tolerances. My boss at the time kept telling me
"There is only one thing smaller than an knat's whatsit and that is the hole in the end and that is the standard we work to."

Hey Keith I used a Cincinnatti mill for both the repair and manufacture of 1:1 sized steam engine parts at the Bluebell. It was a very rigid and forgiving machine for a novice to use, this was when I was 14 and a volunteer there. I would have liked the machine myself but the last time I was at Sheffield Park it was away, dagnabbit Cheers Brian

Interesting thread - I had a Chinese Lathe (Model B) and hated it. I have now got myself a Boxford BUD and love it. However, my Milling Machine is a Warco Minor and I have no problems with it what so ever - I've fitted digital verniers on two of the axis which is a big help. Never having heard of a Deckel FP1 I googled it. Check out this guys stuff : www.engravingforum.com/showthread.php?t=336Wow!

I was actually given a milling machine at the weekend! well, I had just bought a big granite surface plate, and the gentleman said he would rather give the mill to someone who would reassemble it than let the scrapman have it. French made, G.Dufour. Currently in pieces after a table regrind and the main box section column looks like it weighs approx 1 tonne! Any info gladly received. Also met a guy locally who wheels and deals in all sorts of junk, he'd just sent a big shaper and a big planer to the scrap yard, but has a 1960's Harrison L12 lathe (very nice but with "gibralta" type solid toolpost instead of topslide), bridgeport MK1 CNC, a big elliot victoria omnimill (like a bridgeport only better), a huge elliot invicta shaper inside and a 24 inch shaper together with a whole clutch of big old lathes (inc a lang & sons) rusting outside! looks like you struck gold there buddy. I am still watching ebay and prices are dropping - a Deckel just gone for around £600 and plenty of small mills going for less !
