I have just bought a Pallas HOO horizontal mill off ebay , pile of scrap really but I am going to make it work. It was advertised as in good working order and the photo gave the impression that it had been in use recently , I doubt that it has been in use for at least 20 years. Anyway its all stripped and ready for paint before re-build . Does anyone have any info on setting up the mandrel bearings , or any info at all come to think of it!

Hi Abby,
coincidence or what?
Dr John used to have one of them! only his had a vertical head of some sort grafted on.
What sort of bearings does it have? plain, ball or roller?
If plain, where and how does it take end thrust?
also what means are available for adjustment?

You have to hand it to these armchair pontificators Abby ... Incidentally, Noddy, where's Big-ears - after all, this forum does have a dastardly and mutley?! And also Nod - the second link doesn't work - the others are irrelevant drivel too!

Damn Aussies...
I've just tried getting to the second link through their search engine, looks like the host server's down at the moment, we'll see if it comes up again later. Its the third item on the third link anyway.
Ah, the armchair is comfortable though...
We'll see if a big ears ever registers, perhaps ther's one lurking in the background already?

We all know elephants have big ears. The reason being, Noddy won't pay the ransom!
Ouch in anticipation,
Waggy.

Thanks guys , its all in bits now , actually the spindle is very simple , two Timken taper rollers at the front with lock-nuts for adjustment and a plain roller bearing at the rear with another lock-nut. The whole set -up is clamped between front and rear plates which screw onto the housing casting. I am machining the original flat belt pulleys to take a v-belt , bags of meat on them. Main problem is the rack and pinion feed on the table. I want to fit a screw ! A stroke of luck here , the elliot mini-mill which I bought a few weeks ago came with a brand new spare screw and nut which is about long enough to do the job . However the table is much thinner than I would have expected and I will have to machine a deep recess to take the nut. The machine is very heavy , about 1/2 ton but breaks into three main parts so after taking off the removeable bits two old men can just about load the castings into the back of a land-rover, gonna need some help to lift it back onto the stand though , unless I can rig some lifting gear. Should make a useful addition to the workshop! . . . . . P.S. Noddy the links work fine but too much info LOL!
