Does anyone know anything about how to sell model steam engines? My father was model engineer hobbyist. He had a complete small engine (about 2 foot long and 18" high I guess) and a 'nearly' complete ' John Fowler, The Burrell Traction Engine' model (about 6 foot long and 4 foot high I guess). They have been sitting in mom's garage since Dad died nearly 20 years ago. There is also a model thrashing box (complete). Mom wants to get rid of them now, but needs advise from someone who knows something about them. She was thinking of putting them in an auction? Sorry, we are such novices we don't even know what scale they are!!

If you post some pictures we may be able to identify the models for you.
As for selling: Auctions: to get a reasonable price you will need a specialist sale or you could try Flea Bay. There are some a number of dealers who buy and sell models, a local model engineering club should be able to point you in the direction of a reputable one.
Note: Due to their age their boiler certificates will be out of date which will reduce their value.

The thing to consider if selling to a dealer,is that they always buy at one price, then sell on at a higher price. With auctions you would probably have to pay a vendor's premium, dependant on the auctioneer's rate. One dealer you could try is Station Road Steam and for an auction house dealing in models you could try Dreweatt Neate. Good luck with your search!

Jo replied to the poster's query about a private sale: If you post some pictures we may be able to identify the models for you. It is an excellent idea to get a positive identification and I feel sure that Members of this list will enjoy the exercise! However, the writer may not have the experience to get photos onto the List as I note that others have struggled a bit to find the trick of it. Maybe, though, someone with the know-how will volunteer to do it for you. Decent models seem to attract good prices on eBay and it is likely that that path will attract more notice than most others but everything depends on getting a good description and photos so take your time and get all the advice you can. You will find a reasonably comprehensive list on this site.

Thank you for your responses. Not sure what is meant by the 'You have PM's'??
When I next go up to my mothers I will take the camera and get some photos, then maybe someone will recognise what these models are.
Thanks. Caroline

your PM's are your personal messages. There should be a link at the very top of the web page. It will say " Hey, chsteph, you have x messages, y are new"

As Mentioned, Dreweatt Neate have 2 sales a year in Bristol, and their chappy Michael Matthews is very helpful & obliging I sold my Myford and some steam launches through them, and the prices obtained were good, sold without too much hassle. Ebay is a good sales medium but brace yourself for lots of questions, people wanted to come look see / timewaste / criticise, and possible the High bidder letting you down and not wanting the item, believe me, these things happen, that said it will get your items to a wide marketplace. You could also try this place, its free. www.steam-engines-for-sale.com/Good Luck with your sales. Alex
