Hi their, I am new to this Web site and therefore I do not know the members interests but I am building an Evening Star and would be greatful of any advice (apart from don't build it. I am up to the boiler and believe their is a problem with the regulator as drawn and some modifications have been published. I am presently making the formers for all of tyhe flanged plates and am about to roll the tapered tube. Any knowledge would be helpful.
Thanks :-/ :-*

Hi Heapeyman Im building one to, but it is currently paused whilst I play with other engines! One or two people have complained about the regulator being stiff to operate but the design published in model engineer fairly recently solves this. There are a couple of other worth while mods to make. A few builders have scrapped the leaf springs and fitted coil springs enabling a finer control of axel loadings, turn the cast iron treads of the wheels and fit steel tryes and finally the model benifits hughely from additional weight. Fill the area between the frames with lead. The engine has more power than it can usefully use otherwise.

Chris I will dig out an article I saw in one of the model mags where they changed the regulator to one that works on a cam and two poppet valves. One of the valves is set 10 thou before the other. On starting this completely eliminates wheel slip and makes the regulator very smooth in operation. Regards Reg Townsend

Can anybody tell me which issue, cheers, Andy The article to which you refer, appeared in Model Engineer,Vol.192,No.4216,5-18 March 2004. It was written by a John Jones of the Guildford Society, describing a double poppet valve regulator devised by Len Steel, and fitted to a superb 5" gauge 9F which Len Steel has under construction. Hope this is of help.

Hi Laurie, thanks for the info, I'll try to locate a copy, Andy Does it violate copyright if a scan appears here? If not there is your answer Seems it does and judging by the "snotogram" from the lawyers in the Quorn group, I'd hesitate to post any scanned copy of ME or MEW without prior permission from the publishers

Some kind soul could scan and send direct, I've responded to a few wants ads this way. Its only like me lending you a copy of the whole mag, I'm not sure if there is a law I'm breaking if I lend a whole mag to a friend so I have no problem sending a single page scan. Simon

Whilst not "as designed", the superb model that Jim Ewins built that was basically a 9F had some interesting modifications.
Details in EIM, or at:http://pageperso.aol.fr/jemodeng/index_frames.html?f=fs

Thanks for all the info last year. I have now built the boiler and have made the poppet valve to the design in the Model engineer. I had to redesign slightly to fit the dimensions for the 9F so I redrew it on CAD and have now completed it. Their are a few crucial dimensions to avoid breaking out of ports through body. I am also having difficulty getting the Berrilium copper for the poppet springs so if anybody knows of any I would much appreciate a few pointers. Progress a bit slow at the moment, I am now doing the valve gear and once that is done will try to get it running on compressed air. Cheers
