Hello everyone, new to the forum...
Just bought an old Myford Super 7. It was largely dismantled when I picked it up and I've spent much of today rebuilding it. The only major problem I had was getting the motor drive belt in place. The one supplied with the lathe was about 31" around. The manual specifies a 33 1/2" belt. I went to a local motor factors and bought one that was even longer but it still seems too short. I can run the lathe but the motor spindle is right at the top of the belt guard cutout. Tensioning the belt isn't going to give it much more clearance.
Any thoughts on this?

I presume your machine is using a single phase motor If it is, then throw away the fixed length belt and buy yourself some link belting. Your local transmission system supplier will oblige. One of the old trade names was "Brammer". If you go to the web site www.lathes.co.uk/page4.html you'll find an article describing the product. This is available in all the different sections sizes and can be made up to any length. Just ensure you fit it facing the correct way round, such that the inner layers are pointing such that they tend to be lapped by the drive pulley rather than being lifted. Because this form of belting has some degree of elasticity it will virtually eliminate any torsional vibration that is caused by the single phase motor. This tip for using linked belting was originally given to me by one of Myford's "old boys" when I phoned up complaining about the belts they supplied and the vibration I was experiencing. trust this solves your problem jack

I second that advice. I fitted the link belt, supplied direct by Myford, to a super 7 years ago. I have never had a problem since.
You will find that if you fit the belt the wrong way round it is much noisier (when running forward!!!)

Thanks for that, I'll have a look. I think you can buy it direct from lathes.co.uk. Has anyone done the poly-vee conversion as per the Hemingway kit? I was wondering whether that was possible for the motor drive side as well?
