Building Done Youngs 5 gauge Jill. The return crank call for the use of 1/16 taper pins to secure return crank onto the square shaft. The slotted end has a bolt through. What size hole do you drill for the reamer? and the cost of the reamers a bit expensive

You can make life a little easier for the reamer by step drilling the hole which will reduce the amount of metal that the reamer has to take out e.g drill the hole the smallest diameter of the pin and then drill halfway through with a slightly larger drill. I've reamed holes for 1/16" pins through 5/8" wide crank webs just using the one size drill but you have to be very careful!

Hi Tracer
If you're into taper-pinnery be aware that old reamers are not exactly compatible with some currently available pins !
Imp. standard for taper pins was 1/4" taper per foot. or 1 : 48
Some new stuff [ metric ] is 1 : 50 so I have been told.
Perhaps someone can verify, I don't remember where I got the info

I recall doing some analysis years ago on the 1:48 and 1:50 tapers. i came to the conclusion that if you took tolerances into the equation, a 1:48 taper pin could actually comply with the dimensions of a 1:50 and vice-versa. in practice, I think you'll not notice - bash it in hard enuff and it'll deform to fit anyway.
Take care with reaming - clear chips frequently, don't force it. Best bet would be the GHT staking tool to avoid any lateral movements. Good luck!
