This one's been on Ebay several times now over the last month or so. It would be a nice project for perhaps the more experienced model engineer who wants a quick build and can carry out the necessary 'fettling' to produce a reliable working engine.
I do wonder though if the demise of Modelworks and consequent lack of spares and backup will tend to put people off buying. I can forsee such kits going for next to nothing in the future.

I don't think they will go for next to nothing, but perhaps a lot lower price than this. After all you could probably pick up a working Simplex for about£2K,that needs no fettling, and the design is a know good performer.

£2k for a Simplex!!! Most seem to go for the £2.5-3K mark even if they need fettling. A good one up and running is £3k plus now...

He's dropped the price to 2,700 Buy-It-Now or offers about two listings ago . Two guys offered 2,600 on the auction which just closed and he refused. It is re-listed it still at 2,700. The money it's costing to re-list he'd be better taking the cash, after all he dropped 700 to the new price so another 100 won't make that much difference

Hi Guys I bought the 14XX listed for so many times on E bay that you talk about and am enjoying the exercise of completing the chassis with a few drawings missing. Is there anyone out there who has instructions for kit 4?

Hi Phil Its a Modelworks version. The boiler is dated 2004. I have seen some of the Winson drawings, and been sent a kit 4 drawing from another builder but in general the modelworks ones are far better-pity I am missing 3. Thanks for the offer anyway My original purchaser/builder got stuck (literally I think) with the motion jamming while in kit 4, I am not sure why. I pressed on and completed the motion but is a bit stiffer than I would like, a combination of pistons (with O rings) and the wheels, which on their own tighten up a bit as they rotate, the coupling rods loose all slack at this point in the 360 degree rotation. Maybe oversize keys have meant the wheels are not quite right as described elsewhere in this excellent website. I dont know if I need to remove the wheels or not (my inexperience) so I am off to my club (Malden)on Sunday to seek help. Any news on the Modelworks 5" take over? Was it Modelworks policy to send replacement parts where the design was at fault to all purchasers, or did you have to ask for them? Was everyone notified of faults? Because my purchaser gave up building in 2005, I suspect I have faults still to find with no source of replacements! I plan to test on air before going much further, no point going on if I have to strip it all, but from reading your postings that seems a frequent occurence! Chris

I have a friend who has a modelworks 1400,I'll have a word with him if you like. Can't help you particularly with faults as such, but I am sure there are others here who would let you know of any, although I don't think there are many.

Not a 14xx admittedly but when my Rob Roy locked up after fitting coupling rods I traced it to the quartering - all different by up to 8 deg! Not difficult to check with a dial gauge if you can mount between centres, but then mine were loctited so easier to fix than keys.
It has been announced elsewhere on here that the 5" side has been bought by The Engineers Emporium.
Good Luck, Andy
