You really can't beat the feeling when the pride of your life comes to life, well done.

Congratulations on a very successful first steam up John. Your video is also testimony to all the care and attention you put into your model over the building period. You must be really chuffed What a great job, well done. Look forward to following your progress as your loco moves onto the club track for your first run. Happy steaming Jim

Looks magnificent, John, but I bet in a couple of weeks you'll be thinking - "maybe it would have been better to paint it before steaming?"

Yes, with hindsight it would have been better to paint it first, or at least to prime it. I half expected that steaming would throw up problems that would necessitate dismantling and spoiling the paint finish if I painted it first, but it looks as though that wouldn't have been necessary. I know that it will be a big job to dismantle and remove oil and rust prior to painting. I do also have some more detailing to add to the loco.
Perhaps my relatively trouble-free steaming will encourage other Britannia builders to paint as they go.
Regards,
John

Just a cautionary word, John. I would advise leaving the cylinders and expansion brackets on the frames when painting to pre-empt the possible misalignment due to the paint thickness.

Just saw your entry on your website about your first track run. So glad you have ended up with a great engine in time to escape the MW demise - well done. Hope it gives you years of enjoyment. If you're a member at the Colney Heath club, hopefully I'll see you there as I'm planning to visit them and try that great new extension - I'm hard to miss, I have the 3.5" South African 4-8-2. Although it's 3.5", it's the same size as your Brit, being "narrow gauge".
You mention persistent blow past the valves so am I correct in assuming you'll have a go with the ptfe ones?
well done again!
Andy

Hi Andy, Thanks, yes it was a very enjoyable first run and I now have one and a half miles on the clock. There's a short video at www.britanniabuilder.co.uk/Firsttrackrun.wmv If it doesn't show first time, please try again later as there seems to be an hourly bandwidth limit on my server. Let me know when you visit Colney Heath and I'll try to get along to meet you. I will go for the PTFE valves, but not sure exactly when I'll be able to do this. Regards, John

Nice one John! Glad you had a good first run ;D
John
PS don't worry about the wheel slip - All Brits, full size and smaller, are prone to it!

Congratulations on a good first run, there is nothing like the first five minutes driving a loco you created. Not a bad effort for a Solent sailer! Well done Brian B

And what's wrong with some Solent sailors? Nothing: apart from little things like motor sailing without displaying a cone; Oh, and not knowing the rules of the road (especially when overtaking a slow moving motor boat)!; and, I nearly forgot, assuming they've got right of way when racing; and the ultimate British arrogance: going into the Yacht Club at Cherbourg and demanding 'Two Beers!' without a word of French, etc......
No, there's nothing wrong with some Solent sailors!

going into the Yacht Club at Cherbourg and demanding 'Two Beers!' without a word of French, I know. We really should claim back northern France and make the natives speak English. ;D

Thanks for all the comments - I shall ignore the aspersions cast at Solent sailors, except to point out that I do use my best schoolboy French in the Capitainerie at Cherbourg!
Spamcanman, I've been following your G1 Aster 9F thread and I'm amazed at the level of detail - it puts my 5" Britannia to shame.
Regards,
John

John, my apologies for aspersions that could have been taken personally: I was careful to cast them only on 'Some' Solent sailors. Having met you, I'm quite sure that your behaviour would be an example to us all! JB
