Hi anyone
Can you help me. I have a very good friend who has loaned me the use of a 5 BA tapping die. No ordinary tapping die but, a Colet type?? Unfortunately I have broken this Die and before I have the embarrassing task of telling him, I would like to try and purchase a new one. I have tried a number of suppliers but no one has ever seen one before, can anyone help. The only way I can discribe it is, that it is a 5 BA die that looks like a Tapered colet. I am having trouble trying to insert a photo so I will try with just the letter for now

I would suggest you bite the bullit and explain to your friend what has happend and ask him where he got it from so you could replace it.

i am fairly certain that you are going to end up buying a circ split die and a die stock. The only thing that comes to mind is something that i haven't seen for years and may be called an acorn or cone die. Not sure but they may be an American product.

I feel your grief, anything like the die pictured top right here ? If so John is probably right (as usual) about the American connection. Cheers, Andy

there are no uk suppliers of these dies that i know of,(after 60+ years in the game), i suggest you use your computer skills and find one or two us me clubs and appeal to them, 10 to 1 someone over ther will give you a solution. These collet dies are not meant to cut a new thread, but only meant to finnish one to an accurate size for a precise fit , as in tool room technology, "too precise for me".
good luck mate

i have had a look, today at work, but no luck. I can organise a quote for you but they are going to be incredibly expensive. You may try Tracy Tools, as they were originally an offshoot of a company called RE Coates, a London based company who specialised in anything threading and were always good to try for the more esoteric dies and truly odd-ball items.
We still use them as it is quite surprising what they have tucked away in the odd corner.
