Following the recent , somewhat heated , debate on the relative merits or disadvantages of castings versus fabrications , I am prompted to post my thoughts. Although this is not a direct tout for business I decided to post under trade as certain members get somewhat irate if they think that anyone with business links dare post at all. This is a casting that I am producing at the moment for another member and re-produce the pictures with his kind permission. I am in no way trying to sell these items but use them as an example of what a casting can offer over a fabrication. . . . This part is , I understand , a turbo-generator as fitted to certain German locomotives. I think you will agree that , although by no means difficult , fabrication of this part would be very time consuming. The general concensus appears to be that castings are over-priced or unavailable but this need not be the case. If members building the same or similar projects got together so that they could order more than one of any item , or were to do their own pattern making the costs could be very reasonable. For ethical reasons I cannot quote the price for the above casting but I believe anyone wanting such a part would think it cheap.
