Hi Guys,
Has anyone out there got any experience of the (new) big bore Myfords? I would also like to know your thoughts on the Myford variable speed system.
And whilst I have had excellent service when I have purchased parts for my existing S7B from them; I have heard that their deliveries of new machines can be slow...... Is this true?

Jo,
I haven't used a big bore Myford but I've seen them being demonstrated at the Open days and they look very impressive. Much smoother and quieter than my old single phase S7B.
I appreciate it's a long way for you from Hampshire but if I was considering paying that much cash I'd factor in a trip to Myfords with a view to trying one out for size and discussing delivery timescales.
The other option would be to catch up with them at one of the shows, it's also worth checking out their website as they do special offers now and again...
If you want one in a hurry they probably have recon or display models ex-stock...
Cheers Bryan

Hi Jo
I bought a Myford item off a chap in Southampton a couple of years ago. Had a phone chat with about delivery and he told me he had just ordered a big bore S7. If I can find his number I'll ask him if he would mind you contacting him.
He was very friendly and helpful with the sale, so I'm sure he'd be happy to help you. Since he is relatively local you could probably see it in action. I seem to remember he had managed to haggle with Myford and got some kind of good deal, so he'd be worth talking to on that account as well.
Cheers

Hi Matt/Bryan,
I was going to have another look at them at the Midlands show but there is a world of difference between playing with one at a show and living with one. Matt if you find the guys details..
As for offers: Next year is 75th so hopefully they will do a celebration price/package.

Do Myford go the WMids show with a machinery stand? Saw them at Guildford last month but only spares etc on offer. The only place I remember seeing them exhibit a lathe was at Sandown Park.
I'm often wrong and happy to be told so!

Last time around they brought lathes to Harrogate and Ascot.
A call would sort it: 0115 925 4222

Just out of interest Jo, why would you opt for a S7+ over this: www.myford.com/html/190301.pdfYou could add an inverter and still have change with a bigger/better/stronger lathe with a full Myford guarantee. Cheers Matt

Hi Jo I bought my connoisseur at the last Myford show s/h for £6600 a big saving on new, and the machine had obviously never been used by the pervious owner. Put simply it feels totally different to use than my very early 50’sML or my Ml7rb longbed, it feels moor substantial, Why did I buy this and not a 254, simple all of my accessories except the chucks will fit, thus saving on accessories If you need any more info just ask Regards Wayne

Hi Wayne,
I am jealous. That was an excellent price for what you got. How did you get around the chucks? I have not seen anyone offering after market back plates.
Hi Matt: I have looked at the 254 but found it does not have the same personality as using a S7: I may as well be using my Colchester. The bottom line is that whilst I have 3 lathes it is still my rather elderly S7B that gets used most of the time as she "feels right". Hence the desire for a replacement.

Hi Jo - can't argue with that! The best lathe is always the one you actually use.
Haven't heard back from the chap in So'ton – will try again.
Cheers

Hi Jo
Myford do a blank back plate, and I am currently waiting for chromos to have the 125mm 4 jaw self centering chuck on offer again, I bought the 4 jaw independent chuck and face plate when I picked the lathe up. I am currently thinking about mounting a 125mm 3 jaw chuck on a standard Myford back plate for my ML7R as I am amazed at the difference theses bigger chucks make, but I don’t know how the stiffer spindle of the big bore adds to the feel.
The variable speed is a doddel to use and the big bore runs up to 3000rpn if you ever need it
Also its worth pointing out due to my age I hope I will get at lest 30 years use out of it so for me it was worth spending the money.
Another sad point is if Myford go bust, the 7 series lathe side would be defiantly bought up, due to the amount of lathes out there, however Myford already have spare part shortages for some of the 254’s, if they go bust it would probably be the end of 254 parts. My advice would be buying an m250/m300 Harrison, or 2000 bantam instead of a 254.
Regards Wayne

Hello Wayne, Is Myford about to go bust? Do you know something we don't?

Hi Wayne,
I throughly agree with you. There is no point in delaying buying machine tools: They only get more expensive, you have less time to recover the investment in and in the mean time things take longer to machine.
If you take my S7B I paid £300 for her in 1988 and I do not believe a week has gone by without her being used so she has cost about 28p a week. Like you I hope to get at least 30 years out of her replacement, which is about £6 a week.
There are not many hobbies that cheap!
