Being a newby, I have just completed my first Stuart 10v !!. I intend to power it with steam, however I would like to see if it works before I spend to much more time and money. Can anyone suggest a cheap method of supplying compressed air?

Hi Beg a discarded tyre valve from your local garage, strip the rubber bit off, and fit the remaining metal bit to the steam chest.(How ,I leave to you). Take engine to garage, attach air line. Cost - 20p!

Cheaper ?
Do what Richard said and then use your car foot-pump (if you own one) or the newer electric tyre inflators that most of the lads my son's age seem to carry around in their cars.
Failing ownership of either, it's back to the garage and 20p.

At my local "Every Little Helps" supermarket garage it is free (or was last time I used it), but woe betide anyone using it for any other purpose than tyre inflation.

You could simply use your spare tyre - like air-brushing . If everything is set up right and the engine is free you only need a couple of PSI to get it running.

Yes, but then you have to go to the garage and spend 20p to pump up your spare tyre again.

And you need an adaptor to depress the valve in the spare tyre. Oh how the costs do mount up !

Look you lot, I was only joking about the expense. Could you all bottle the hot air being blown about !! I guess this would be sufficient to get a number of engines running. " back to your lathes boys".

OK. I'll be serious.
Some MEs have had success with aquarium pumps. You could try one of those. Aldi were doing a cheap compressor a few months ago. Maybe they might have one left in your "local srore".
BTW. On the not too serious side. You must know, by now, that posters on these threads can't be stopped having fun, so it's best not to supply ammunition in the form of "concerns about cost", "Scottish thriftyness", "mothers-in-law", "SWMBO", or similar triggers to humourous replies.
Besides which, some of the "jokey replies" often contain a real gem of a serious idea.

In a similar thrifty vein, I was reading my 'Words and Music' regarding a small soldering job, and I found myself being entreated to be a little 'Cohen-McPhersonish' with the silver solder..... JB
