For the fractionally challenged among us, whilst at the open day of an industrial tool supplier I came across a triple reading digital caliper that reads not only in metric, and decimal inches, but also FRACTIONS of inches down to 128ths of an inch. Priced at £32.95, it is supplied by www.tengtools.co.uk/Limit through their usual stockists.

Anyone ever tried using a manual vernier that is calibrated in 1/8" instead of the usual 1/10" ? Not very handy I can assure you. No doute the digital version is much easier to use.

Dave They used to be very common before the cheap dial calipers turned up. Probably still got one buried in my shed somewhere. Here's an advert for the exact calliper that was used throughout schools and Universities in the UK www.buy.com/prod/fractional-scale-vernier-caliper/q/loc/63024/208063814.htmlYou can get flashier ones from Mitutoyo but I've never used them. I never found the cheapo ones an problem in spite of having spent all my adult life otherwise using metric units I believe they may have been called Columbus gauges but I tend not to trust my memory so much these days !
