Hi I am trying to silver solder components to manufacture the crankshaft on a Stuart V10 steam engine. Standard gas welding gear is rather big and tricky to control. I am looking for a cheap kit to do occasionalsmall jobs like this. Maybe there is tiny jets for standard welding gear?
Thank you for your interest

Small tips are available, but they can get pretty expensive. A simple propane or MAP torch should be plenty for the Stuart crankshaft.

Machine Mart do a set which includes torch, 3 jets, hose and regulator for twenty quid. You then only need a propane bottle. Works very well.

Strange as it sounds, I have a nice windproof lighter that does soldering rather well. It is a chromed metal body, and gives a nice narrow, long blue flame. Runs on butane gas lighter refills. I think they are about a fiver from an outdoors shop.

A DIY shop propane/butane torch should handle it *IF* you use a brazing hearth to 'keep the heat in' (I made one from 3 or 4 pieces of 'Thermalite' type block available from Wickes or a builders merchant, works a treat). Not enough volume of heat to do a boiler but should be ok for crankshafts etc.
