I'm not going to file my steam valve handle bores! Anyone know where to get square broaches? I see Chronos have some but I can't see what they are like from the photo. They look like Swiss files to me! Thanks JB

Piece of square Silver Steel or Gauge Plate, turn end to form spigot same diameter as square end with a coned recess thus forming teeth. Place "Punch" in pre drilled hole in handle and squeeze through. If you're doing a lot, you could always harden the stake. Use them for broaching square holes in Dobbins hooves, much kinder than smashing square nails through. Regards Ian.

You can buy an awful lot of swiss files for the price of a broach. We use them at work (6mm and above, for lock parts) and they're hundreds of quid each. Broaching machines aren't that common, either. I usually file my handwheels out something like and then bash a sharp "size" square through.

Ive just used a needle file held in the drill chuck to do mine. Drill the hole fractionaly lager than the size of the file, clamp everything down tight and then glently work the file through the hole. Obviously leave the drill switched off!!

Works a treat Andy! I just tried it using a brass 4BA Nut balanced on top of a piece of tube held vertically. Nothing was clamped down but it pushed it thru no problem! Many thanks JB
