Hi All
As Secretary of the Bristol SMEE I have this info from our IMLEC organiser:
Thanks for your interest in IMLEC 2009 to be held at Bristol 4/5 July. Unfortunately, we are not yet in a position to start accepting entries. In order to make it fair for everyone, we will publish a notice in the first copy of Model Engineer in March 2009 calling for entries. From that date on, entries will be accepted by either snail mail or (we hope) electronically using the entry form which we will include on our web site at the same date. Entries will only be accepted by either of these two routes.
Cheers ... Kevin

It doesnt say that they will only allocate a position to the first entries they receive. Therefore all entrants should have an equal chance.

Hi Prospective IMLECers
More news from our IMLEC Team:
The Editor of Model Engineer has informed us that the IMLEC article and the notice calling for entries will appear in the second issue in March (No. 4347) not the first as we stated previously. No entries before publication of 4347 please. I also understand that there will be 3 ways to submit an entry: 1. Filling in a form on our website (www.bristolmodelengineers.co.uk) which will go live at the same time as the publication of ME 4347 2. Print out a form from the website and submit via snail-mail 3. Send request for an entry form via email or snail-mail, receive form via snail-mail, fill-in and return via snail-mail.
The Chief Organiser assures me that measures are in place to ensure that all 3 options have an equal chance of entering :-)
Any questions - please revert via this thread.
Cheers ... Kevin Secretary, Bristol SMEE

Hi Kevin,
Luckily my current boiler certificates will be valid for the 4th and 5th, (hydraulic a few years to go), but I wonder whether it's a good idea generally to ask for entrants to include steam certs that will be valid in July, as many clubs only start to do boiler cert days in April at the earliest.
Many entrants may have to wait till April or later to get the new season's certs so may be unfairly delayed in entering, in order to satisfy this pre-requisite.
I can understand the need for this if entrants have tended to pitch up on the day 'sans' valid certificate in the past, and avoids the possibility of entering engines that subsequently fail their new test, but if this has tended to go smoothly in the past, perhaps some flexibility here might be called for?
Just a thought...

Hi Andy, I totally agree I also don't like the idea of sending the original copies of the certificates in the post if they get lost the history of the loco is lost as well I cannot see why they will not accept a photocopy in the post and we turn up on the day with the original proof.

Hello, Some T/E rally ask for your boiler test cert. even if it is out of date. An out of date cert. is no use to any organiser, unless it means that my boiler WILL PASS its next test.I WISH?? I will never send the original except to the insurance company. Albert.

Hi spamcanman,
As far as I know, you can request as much coal as you like. I believe one would estimate the max amount needed for the run, to avoid running out on the run and having to grab a bag on the fly to top up. I go for about half a tender's worth then hopefully (!!) have some left over at the end.
You do need to know your loco's consumption at speed though. Hopefully the loco needs less coal at speed, not more, as the fire will get much hotter than the average public run. This also usually brings the temp of the whole boiler up more than usual, so giving a bit of heat reserve.
Reading the reports in old MEs is very interesting. Unfortunately my loco is hungry on coal so I will have to try compensate with a heavy load...
cheers Andy

Andy, it sounds like you got an entry (I did) I cannot find out anything about coal I thought there was a given amount?
Are you at Reading this Sunday.

Hi Tony,
Yup, will be at Reading this Sunday for sure, hopefully there will be plenty of passengers. Weather might be half all right if that high pressure materialises.
Yes I did get an entry. Are you taking the Manor? As I understand it, the less coal you use the better, but nothing stopping you taking more coal. Better to take too much, then they will just weigh what you don't use to get your consumption in lbs.
Personally I'd rather have too much in the beginning than have to worry about getting more coal handed to me on the fly.
I think the only limit is the half hour run, then the one who goes the furthest, pulls the heaviest load and uses the least coal wins!
btw, Reading is also running on Easter Saturday. Get hold of the club secretary on the website
cheers Andy
