I have a piece of 1.5" plate approx 9" x 6" that I have just squared up with the intension of making an all encompassing work holder for the milling machine. I am thinking studs on the bottom for repeatability then threaded holes in the top and may be edge(s). A full length rebate, perhaps, and a couple of vee slots with stops to all three. Almost a large finger plate.......
As a beginner I'd appreciate any suggestions. Did Tubal Cain describe something of this nature somewhere?

Hi Rod when you say studs on the bottom do you mean dowels that fit in the tee slot ? if so check that the slot runs true to the head over the full travel with a DTI as on some mills this can be out.

Thanks Paul. I do mean dowels on the bottom (just thought that was a carpenter/joiner term ). I'll do as you suggest. Ian was good enough to send me a link to something similar so I should have a busy week-end. Rod

If you also make some "studs" / Dowels with shoulders you can then use them to locate long items especially if you have to machine something longer than the travel of your mill table. you can set up, mill one length then slacken the clamps and move the item along the dowels re-clamp then resume the cut.
