Can anyone tell me if the front and rear top part (water filling area) of a locomotive tender should be painted the same as the body colour? On some of the steam trains I have seen recently during preservation, including Flying Scotsman and Blue Peter, this is the case but I cannot remember what they were like in the good old days. It could be that it was due to all the coal dust and grime that gave them a black appearance. I do know that the streamlined Coronations had the tender tops painted blue or maroon but I would like to know about the A4's in general during the BR period.

The problem is that in the good old days of British Railways the overall colour was black so it wasn't possible to differentiate. However I would say that on those locos that were not black if the tender had side raves that came above the tank top then the top was black. For BR tenders where there were no side raves then the body colour probably went over the top of the tank. So confusion reigns.

GWR tank locos were black on tank tops, and inside the coal bunker,so probably tender tops were black too.
