Hi,
I am offering a Plate Cutting service – steel, brass, copper, aluminium, etc., even plywood and stone. This uses modern laser or water-jet cutting machines.
Parts that can be produced are limited only by your imagination. Typical applications include:
Locos: frames, tanks, cladding, etc. Traction Engines: hornplates, spokes, strakes, etc. Boilers: plates, formers, etc. Clocks: frames, crossed out wheel blanks, etc.

Thanks for the query about our cutting service.
You asked: what is the maximum thickness in M.steel and Stainless you can cut. I understand that the maximum thickness is quoted as 16" (one foot four inches or 400mm) - we haven't put it to the test yet!
can you quote from a DXF drawing - the software which the drawing has to be entered into only takes ".dwg", but I think it is easy to convert from one to the other - although I haven't tried yet.
If you would like to send me a drawing I will experiment and if successful can give you a quote.

Hi Paul,
In your earlier posting you asked: can you quote from a DXF drawing.
I have done some investigation on this one and the simple answer is - YES, despite what I said before! It appears that the software associated with the cutting machines will accept two formats of drawing ".dwg" & ".dxf", but the ".dxf" format has almost never been used!
So it should be an easy matter to produce the parts you want from your ".dxf" drawings. The only possible snag that I can see is if I cannot open the drawing and view it first I may not be able to alter any little things to suit the cutting machines.
If you are interested send me a ".dxf" drawing and let me experiment a little.

Thanks Roger I have a couple of jobs coming up in the new year so when I get round to doing the drawing in DWG I will mail it to you. The first job will be in Ali approx 25 - 30 mm thick

We do not have any stock of aluminium. If you have a source of the right thickness material it might be best if you could supply the metal, otherwise we will have to search out a suitable supplier. The exact spec for the metal will determine how easy this will be.

I am very interested in laser and waterjet cutting, we have a local company in Saltash but would prefer someone smaller. Distance into Cornwall is no problem as I would have to pay to get back into Devon over the bridge. ( postage is cheaper )
We have solidworks, but once it was converted into a file should be fine.

Thanks for the interest in "Marodo Cutting".
I have no first hand experience of "Solidworks". If it can produce ".dwg" drawings I am sure it would be fine. If you want to send me (via e-mail) a drawing made with Solidworks I can easily check to see if it is compatible with the software at this end. Incidentally it should be in millimetres - the cutters are set up for metric sizes.
I look forward to hearing from you and hopefully cutting metal (or other material) for you.

Sounds like an interesting service you offer. I've used a number of laser and waterjet cutting companies over the years through work and started using it more and more recently for my own projects. One thing I do notice that tends to be quite variable between suppliers is the cut quality on thicker material (6mm +).
Do you either have some good quality pics, or samples, of the cut quality in thicker steel? Also, do you cut holes by spiralling inwards? I find this cutting stratergy minnimises the 'pip' and makes reaming holes much as easier, as well as looking better.

You asked: Do you either have some good quality pics, or samples, of the cut quality in thicker steel? Over 90% of our work is done on 1/8" or thinner material. I did catch sight of a piece of granite about 2" thick which had been cut into a fancy shape, with a very good surface finish on the cut faces. I will be going over to the machine next week and will see if there are any jobs in thicker material which I could photograph.
Also, do you cut holes by spiralling inwards? Most of the holes are cut by starting in the middle. The pips you talk of are an essential part of water-jet cutting - to stop the loose bit being blasted across the factory! They are very small and easily smoothed with a couple of strokes of a file.

Hi Dave,
A little while ago you asked: do you cut holes by spiralling inwards?. I had opportunity to ask my colleagues today about this technique and the answer is "No".
The process using the laser cutter is to start cutting the hole in from the periphery of the hole and then moving to the edge of the hole and then describe the circle, or whatever shape the hole is. I have not noticed any pips in a laser cut hole.
