Gentlemen,
At the last MEX I bought a spare Green Wheel to upgrade my bench grinder to TCT. The large centre hole has a plastic insert that reduces it down to fit the nominal drive shaft.
The issues are:
1. The plastic insert isn't that good, if anything it's too loose. Should I re-make it?
2. There weren't any clamping washers. Would cereal packet card be suitable?
3. Is there anything else I need to consider?
If I get this one wrong the wheel can explode.

Steve...under no circumstances fit the wheel until you have contacted the supplier or are sure of the correct fitting procedure..I have been there when one exploded...not a happy sight. John.

Hello i would simply say yes to the first two the only thing to look for is damage to the wheel, cracks chips or damp / oily patches any of these may cause the wheel to shatter, just dress the wheel true with a a dressing tool of some sort (my preferance would be a dressing stone) and treat it with respect.

Hi,
The centre adaptor only needs to be a close fit not tight, and should be thinner than the wheel so it does not protrude, it's only there to centralise the wheel on the shaft the 2 flanges actually hold the wheel. Blotters can be made from thin soft card between 1 & 2 mm thick and should be very slightly larger than the flange. Check the wheel as spug103 says and you could also ring it, hold it by the centre and tap it gently with a pencil and you should get a pure note. Do not tighten the wheel excessivly, just enough so it does not slip.
Hope this helps.
Chris.

One way I was taught to check whether a wheel was cracked, was stick a small dia rod through the centre hole. Then tap the side of the wheel with a piece of wood (paint brush handle) if the wheel rings it's okay, if it goes 'dunk' stands a chance it is cracked. Another thing to make sure of is don't exceed the stated feet per min or RPM on the identification lable.
