Anyone with any ideas on the best way to hold work securely on a lathe cross slide where there are no "T" slots or any existing threads in an otherwise smooth top slide about 20mm thick.
This cross slide is on a dovetailed bed. The lathe is a Chinese made 8" x 900mm

Short of drilling and tapping some hefty holes in the cross slide, I can't see how you can hold anything securely on the slide.

Just wondered though - how do you mount the toolpost on the cross slide?

DJ. He said it was mounted on a dovetail: some drilled and tapped holes would appear to be required, provided there is sufficient meat and no big slots where the topslide nut fits. If it were me I would get hold of a bit of substantial plate, drill and tap it to hold the work and make that fit.

Sorry, JB I didn't quite get your point - he said the cross slide was on a dovetail - most are, but I wondered how the tool post mounts on the cross slide. As it's 8" from the centres to the bed, there must be a substantial way of mounting a tall tool post - My Chinese lathe is similar dimensions, but has a couple of T slots in the cross slide.

Small items can be held in the toolpost, I did this recently with some T-Nuts.
Is it perhaps possible to remove the bolts of the compound and attach a block and/or large angle plate there?
My cross slide already had one hefty tapped hole in it so I created another to attach a small angle plate. I've screwed some plugs into these for day to day use.

There must be a tool post to complete the lathe . I remove tool post and mount a 3/8" thick plate using tool post mounting bolts and i can put any holes in this plate to suit any job . I also use this plate for holding cylinders for boring between centres . I had posted this with photos in past thread " boring between centres " .

Hi all, Clive here. Thanks for some great ideas, have come up with an idea which when made I will photo for the group. Basically a 20mm steel plate 12" x 6" with a cutout piece leaving a 20mm tounge able to fit the existing tool post (as if it was a tool) the other end having a 10mm clearance hole to take a 10mm recessed head bolt going into the existing cross slide. This will produce a vertical face to enable threaded holes to mount items with and/or a milling vice to allow for vertical travel during milling operations. Will mount steel slab (on its edge) with a thin gasket material to assist with vibration dampening during use. Would love to use cast iron for this reason but only have 1045 grade steel available at present.
