Are there collets on the market or preferably s/h, other than new from Cowells, that would fit my Cowells ME lathe. The spindle is 14mm x 1mm with an 0 taper.
What exactly should I be looking for?

You could make a spindle nose adaptor and use ER collets. Peter

Thanks. I'll look into that. Expanding on my first post I was wondering if I could do something with say 8mm watchmakers collets usually available on ebay.

As I have recently acquired a Cowells 90ME with just a 3 jaw chuck I have been wondering along the same lines. RDG Tools often list parts with the 14mm x 1 nose thread but I haven't seen collets for the 0 morse taper. I think the Unimat 3 & 4 used the same nose thread so that is worth following up perhaps but I don't know what, if any, taper the Unimat had. RDG currently have a 45mm 4 jaw on a 0 morse taper mount for under £60 which is £100 less than the Cowells item which admittedly fits the nose thread so is more versatile.

Only the later Cowells have the 14x1 spindle all the early ones have 14x1.5 thread so make sure what one you have. I think you will find on the Unimat lathes they could be the older courser thread 14x1.5 type

Thanks for the warning, mine is indeed 14 x 1 so must be later. The little Sieg C0 has the same 14 x 1 nose thread but a slightly larger register (15mm as opposed to the Cowells 14mm).
Arc Eurotrade have been advertising an ER16 collet chuck to fit the C0 via a backplate although I couldn't find it on their site today, 'twas under £20 I seem to recall ;D
I've seen a further reference to Unimat 3 and 4 having the correct thread and also the same 14mm register so that could well be an avenue to pursue.

Very good point spamcanman my machine is the 1.5mm thread. Pays to measure and not just read the spec! ER16s on a backplate may be an option but the smallest collet, I've seen, seems rather large at 3/16".

ER 16s can be bought down to 1mm and will hold slightly smaller.
