B****r it!
Just spent a few days carefully boring and drilling the smokebox tube. The snifting valve hole position isn't dimensioned so I just measured it off the drawing> BIG mistake, it is partially covered by the top of the saddle.
So, the choice is fill it and re-drill, or counter bore the inner surface of the saddle.

My initial architectural training was in a drawing office and I've spent many hours in that first one and others. A note on drawings was often "Do not scale - if in doubt ask". You have to beware of 'draughtsman's licence' and remember that most draughtsmen have a wicked sense of humour. ;D Off topic; Did I see a forum member complaining about the sale price of MEs?

Have you read the original Martin Evans Simplex article? He admits to scaling of a drawing and then using that measurement on the finished plans? His excuse was that the master drawing was on wax paper and was left in the sun.
Shouldn't have done it anyway.

Hi Russell,
what material is the smoke box tube? When I've done the same sort of thing, I have made a threaded plug and caulked it and blended it in with a very fine flap wheel. Is there room to do that?
Chris.

Hi Chris,
It's a rolled brass tube from one of our suppliers - not very round so a bit of caulking will be required after riveting the rings.
I have silver soldered a plug in place and re-drilled so it's fine now. I have double checked most dimensions before cutting and have found a few errors.

Good, well done, I was lucky Phil at Blackgates just happened to have a bit of copper tube that will sleeve the boiler a treat, all I have to do now is finish rebuilding the club Simplex and I can start on my Super Simplex.
