I was browsing Chronos's website this morning whilst waiting for the workshop to warm up and I found this interesting gadget. www.chronos.ltd.uk/acatalog/info_SDP450.htmlVery interesting, I thought, then I saw the price: £97 plus VAT! I think I'll continue putting a square against a 10mm ground bar in the collet chuck with white paper behind it! JB

With a round column mill I just line up the quill against the column by sight. Good enough for most purposes and dead easy.
Otherwise mount a dial gauge on an arm in the collet.

On their special offer page I see they are down to £68 including vat and delivery. At shows during the year will probably be closer to £50 when purchased in person. Although probably a bit of a luxury certainly could do the job. I built something substantial like this for the section that fits in the collet chuck on the mill and a .0001 thou DTI gauge securely fitted to that. Gauge came from an engineering quality control dept. .001 thou gauge would suffice but one does not look a gift horse in the mouth when offered it for a couple of pounds.
