Hi Everybody As it doesn't seem to be worth keeping money in the bank any more I've a notion of buying a good secondhand Myford lathe, probably a Super 7, any suggestions for a reliable supplier [or pm me if there are any worth avoiding ]. I don't want to use Ebay as most of the sellers are too far away to inspect before purchase. Myford have quite a few secondhand reconditioned ones but they are quite pricey, is it worth paying the extra? Ron

I believe that if you buy a Myford reconditioned one then you get the factory warranty. Hence the extra cost, but I think that its worth it. I've seen them being reconditioned and they do a proper job

Hi Ron, Last week on Ebay there was a stunning ML7 with gearbox, stand and drip tray plus many accessories and a pump in the stand for oil coolant it was mint with all receipts and manuals from new the owner had used it for 3 hours only it sold for £1730 much cheaper than a dealer would sell it for.

Hi Ron, I would go with Myfords...reconditioned one is good with warranty, due to current market climate you can ''Haggle'' a bit also might get free delivery...something you would not be able to do on e bay...worth thinking about All the best for now, John.

Very difficult really buying without inspection. I would probably deal direct with Myford seeing as you are based in Scotland as they do recondition their lathes very well plus I believe there is a guarantee. There are a few dealers advertised in ME & MEW that ship worldwide. I have used one with very good service. eBay can be very good but I would want to inspect very carefully first for this sort of price as there are many dodgy goods advertised as there are also good/brilliant deals usually a lot cheaper than dealers. I went to look at a lathe advertised as near perfect. When I viewed found the first 6" of bed was very badly worn. All the work had been done on this end of it and the remainder of the bed was virtually untouched.

Myfords have open days from 16 to18 April, always worth a visit. Give them a ring they will always make you welcome. I assume of course you are willing to travel north of Watford ! Try www.gandmtools.co .uk or www.homeandworkshop.co.uk. both seem to carry good stocks of ex school lathes and are both south of Watford. Sapper

Hi Thanks for the info, if I'm going to go ahead I think I'll buy a refurbished one from Myford themselves, as I posted already I don't really fancy one from Ebay unless one appears within about 100 miles or so of me and I can inspect it first, in general I have never had any serious problems with Ebay but a Myford is an expensive item to buy unseen and descriptions can be subjective! Ron PS anyone looking for a Warco BV20 in good condition with it's original accessories?

If the budget can stretch that far then I can recommend getting one with gearbox & power cross feed. Gearboxes can be added quite easily afterwards though and can be purchased secondhand for about £500.

The power cross feed examples do fetch a premium, I don't think it is practicable to retro-fit this in a similar fashion to a screwcutting gearbox as I believe the leadscrew and saddle are different. Wish mine had cross feed, would make milling so much easier. For the likely price of an OEM re-furbished Super 7, I think I would investigate other brands as well. My thoughts on them are listed here: modeleng.proboards20.com/index.cgi?board=toolsandtooling&action=display&thread=3465&page=2#33716Opinions do vary; If you are set on a Myford, I apologise for interfering. I was used to power cross feed years ago when I did turning for a living but I can't say I've really missed it since I took up model engineering, looking at the extra it adds to the price as well I can manage OK without it. The gearbox I fancy but it all depends on the price [as always!] Al, I'm kind of set on a Myford but thanks for your input. Ron

Ron Power cross feed is a luxury and I do use it occasionally, but as you said not essential. Gearboxes are brilliant and can be purchased second hand for about £500 and are very easy to fit. Myford publish a booklet on their gearboxes and fitting them. Myford were actually selling new gearboxes for about £600 at a show year before last. If you buy a lathe without a gearbox from Myford ask what deal they will do to fit one.

Chris.

I was at Myford on Saturday, they have the usual good stock of reconditioned lathes
however i would wait to the show to see what they have on offer at their show
Take some££ as the will want a deposit, if you decide to buy
I bought my connoisseur on the industrial stand for £6600.00 second hand at the last show. The previous owner never used it. but not everthing there was a bargain (in my opinion), they wanted £3500.00 for a ML7Rb with cutch compaird to Super sevens with power crossfeed started at £4000.00+

Hi Wayne,
I still think that you got a bargain there. I gave in trying to buy a new connoisseur from Myford after they took over 8 weeks to quote me the book price and in the mean time put up the delivery from £180 to £300. They claimed that this was a good price as they were about to increase the price due to cost of materials etc. But I notice that in the new price list the price is actually cheaper than they quoted me.....Maybe they thought I was (and lets be honest I felt they treated me as if they thought I was) a dumb female?
I have given in trying to buy another Myford and decided to spend the money on a quality lathe may be a Schaublin or a something equally sexy.

Hi Jo
With Myford its how your face fits with the management, and i certainly don’t with mr c Moore, the first time I met, him he said to my face after taking one look at me "i would never buy a lathe from them" but the shop lads down there knew different.
If it was not for Darren, Peter and Brian I would never use Myford again. However the products they sell are very good and well made.
Also I have told Malcolm that increasing the prises every other month will be there down fall, basically they are trying to do the same turnover from less and less customers
